Raytown Middle School counselor Cynthia Gerdes has been selected as Greater Kansas City School Counselor Association's (GKCSCA) Middle School Counselor of the Year and Raytown High School counselor Nancy Young has been selected as the GKCSCA Secondary School Counselor of the Year.
Gerdes has been a counselor at Raytown Middle School for seven years.
Raytown Middle School Principal Dr. Georgetta May says Gerdes will do anything to support her students. “Ms. Gerdes takes pride in contributing to the success of Raytown Middle School and will go above and beyond the call of duty to help a student in need. No matter the need of the student, Cynthia’s mission is to ensure it is met.”
Young has been a counselor at Raytown High School for 15 years and has worked in the District for 22 years.
Raytown High School Principal Dr. Chad Bruton, says Young’s pride for Raytown High School and love for her students is unparalleled. “Nancy Young is a talented and caring school counselor who looks out for the wellbeing of students, staff, families, and our school. Her efforts make Raytown High School a better place to learn and work. Her talents expand well beyond her assigned job duties and I can always count on her to go the extra mile.”
Counselors are selected for the award based on their implementation of a data-driven school counseling program; development of programs supporting students' career, personal/social, and academic development; their ability to demonstrate leadership, collaborate with students and stakeholders,
and promote equity and access to educational opportunities for all students. Award recipients also must represent school counseling in a professional manner and be an outstanding member of their community.
Both Gerdes and Young will be honored at the GKCSCA Spring Banquet on April 27.
