High School Guidance Counseling

Guidance counselors meet and work with students throughout their high school careers. They also work to support teachers and administrators in their work with students.

Counselors work with students individually or in groups to facilitate the developmen of:

  • the knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of self
  • the skills necessary for effective career exploration and planning, and
  • the competencies needed for educational and vocational development.

Areas of focus for counselors include:

  • presenting and participating with staff each spring in teaching, discussing, and modeling appropriate test-taking skills in preparation for student participation in the state-mandated MAP testing,
  • working annually to support the staff throughout the administration of the MAP tests and serving as building coordinators of this effort,
  • working closely with administration in coordinating course placement in MAP preparation classes for students scoring in Step 1 on the MAP test in the areas of communication arts, math, science, and/or social studies,
  • continuing to provide four-year plans for students as they progress through high school,
  • participating in course fairs and career pathway exploration,
  • supporting A+ coordinators as they work with the entire staff to procure A+ status for students,
  • annually revising guidance publications for use with students and parents to assist in the transition planning from school to career.
