Sophomore Planning Calendar

Continue to focus on strong study habits, obtaining good grades, participating in extra - curricular activities including school based groups and/or sports, and take a set of courses that are challenging for you in order to be well prepared for college. In addition, continue to identify areas that are interesting to you, and explore potential career fields. Also, remember that all your grades are now a part of your permanent record. Colleges will see every term grade and the final average grade.

SEPTEMBER

  • Check your schedule to make sure all of your academic classes and electives are in place.
  • Talk to your parents about taking the PLAN (the practice test for the ACT) in early October. Guidance counselors will visit sophomore social study classes to distribute PLAN information and registration materials. Students who want to apply for the Missouri Scholars Academy will need to take this assessment.

OCTOBER

  • Students should take the practice PLAN test at home under simulated conditions. Upon receipt of PLAN registration, students will be given a booklet that discusses the PLAN test in greater length as well as having some sample problems that students are encouraged to work on before taking this assessment.

DECEMBER

  • Discuss results of the PLAN test with your guidance counselor and with your parents.
  • If need be, examine changes in study habits and read, read, read
  • Herndon Career Center your with your counselor (date may vary).

JANUARY - MARCH

  • Continue to focus on your classes and activities.
  • Enrollment process for Junior year begins and ends in these months.
  • Look to summer opportunities such as Career Institutes. Obtain an application from your counselor.

APRIL-MAY

  • Take MAP assessment.
  • Plan your summer. Perhaps you will take a vacation, work, or volunteer your time. Colleges will be interested in how you spent this time.
  • Try one of the three Career Institutes that are available in the counseling center!
