RQS Generative AI Parent Handout

What is Generative AI?
Generative AI (Gen AI) is technology that creates new content (such as text, images, and video) based on patterns it has learned from large amounts of data. Common examples include ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Gemini.

Important: Gen AI does not "think" or "know" like a person. It simply identifies data patterns. Users must act as the "human in the loop" and judge all information critically.
Safety & Security Measures
We maintain a secure "Walled Garden" for our students. SchoolAI knows about the outside world, but the outside world does not know about our data.
  • Active Monitoring: The system detects concerning chatting and communicates with administrators and counselors regarding:
    • Bullying
    • Mental Health Concerns
    • Violent Behavior
    • Cheating
Why Does It Matter?
Supports Learning: Gen AI can help students with brainstorming, writing support, and studying, encouraging creativity.
Future Skills: Gen AI prompting is becoming an
important skill that colleges and employers look for.
Critical Thinking: The models that train Gen AI can be biased or provide wrong answers, so everyone must learn to evaluate AI output.
Ethical Use: Students must learn how to properly cite their use of Gen AI to avoid accidental cheating or plagiarism.
Academic Guidelines
Under Regulation JG-R1: Student Discipline, unauthorized use of generative AI (like chatbots) is considered cheating and plagiarism.
  • First Offense: No credit, grade reduction, or replacement assignment.
  • Subsequent Offenses: In-school suspension, no credit, course failure, or removal from extracurriculars.
✓ DO
  • Be creative & original.
  • Use AI when explicitly allowed by your teacher.
  • Cite your sources (even if AI is just a thought partner).
✗ DON'T
  • Use AI without permission, even on personal devices.
  • Submit information or ideas AI generated without citation.
School Usage & Spaces
In 6-12 classrooms, we are using SchoolAI Spaces. These are interactive, text-based chatbots designed to simulate scenarios and provide tutoring.
  • Interactive Learning: Students solve real-world problems and explore subjects through safe digital roleplay.
  • Personalized Education: Spaces adapt to individual learning styles and paces to provide tailored feedback.
  • Teacher Support: Teachers monitor student progress and insights via "Mission Control" to offer targeted interventions.
Smart Tech Habits at Home
  • Guard PII (Personally Identifiable Information): Teach your child to keep data like birthdates, addresses, and SSNs private. Data shared with public websites/AI cannot be un-shared and may never be deleted.
  • Protect Passwords: Do not reuse passwords across sites, and never use personal information to create them.
  • Be Skeptical: Teach critical thinking. Help your child question AI responses and double-check anything questionable online.
