Raytown School District Racial Equality Statement
The Raytown C-2 School District serves every child in our community and believes that true equality comes from addressing the proportional inconsistencies in the distribution of economic, social, health, and educational resources among our students and staff of color. We believe that education is power and our primary purpose is to give power through education to all students and in particular to those who are marginalized.
We have been deeply impacted by the tragic murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and the call to action ignited by the loss of these and all of the precious lives of the marginalized citizens in our communities.
We stand with our black students and students of color, because we recognize the systemic injustices our non-white students have faced and will face in their daily lives. The Raytown School district is proud to say that we will continue to make our voices heard and continue to lead in addressing policies, and practices that perpetuate racism and other forms of oppression.
We have been working to address these concerns for many years. Our Cultural Competency Committee, comprised of staff and community members, was created as an assessment tool that allows us to reflect on the inconsistencies in our policies and practices using real-world experiences to shape the direction of our curriculum and educational environment. Our mission statement is “Raising awareness and fostering cultural competency while improving policies and practices to promote equity.” Our committee uses literature, language, and communication to help district leadership make adjustments where needed and formulate new plans to ensure that all of our families can Expect the Exceptional from their schools. Our committee continually seeks to remain aware of current events, legislation and best practices to help inform our students, staff, and community as well as aid in the District’s address to local, state, and federal government.
Our district is governed by a Board of Education that is committed to maintaining a workplace and educational environment that is free from discrimination and harassment in admission or access to, or treatment or employment in, its programs, services, activities and facilities. The board has committed to increasing the number of minority certified employees for the past several years along with creating a welcoming environment through our board goals. This includes supporting efforts to hire our own alumni whenever possible. The Board supports the district leadership’s efforts to create a platform for open conversations through our Citizens Advisory Committee where the Board of Education and district leadership receive input from our students, staff, families and community members.
As we move forward we will continue to:
- Create and maintain a culture that values all in the school community
- Welcome family input regarding the education of their children
- Welcome student input regarding their education and life goals
- Welcome patron input regarding the impact of education within the community as a whole
- Challenge our students to study and work hard in school so they will be successful after they leave us
- Promote the advantages all students have by attending school in a diverse environment
We love our children, our families, our staff, our schools and our community whose voices and stories make us who we are. We can and will do better. Together, we can make a difference.
